I was in Galway recently to photograph Daithí O’Connor from Revive Active for The Business Post. Daithí was the subject for The Big Interview, which is part lifestyle, part business interview, where readers get an insight into his personal life along with what makes him tick in the business world. I have photographed Daithí on a couple of occasions and he is always very personable, chatty and a genuinely nice man to be around. For this photoshoot we met at his home which had an excellent garden area and was an ideal location for photography. As always with shoots of this nature you walk in cold to the environment, as you don’t get the chance to recce it beforehand. Time is always of the essence also your subjects are always busy business professionals who have allotted an amount of time to get it done. Your mind can go into overdrive sometimes, should I shoot there or should I shoot over there or maybe that might work in that corner. Experience has thought me to keep it simple at the beginning, pick two options within the location and flesh them out with a long lens and wide lens approach. Iusually find that this gets a lot of shots in the bag within ten minutes, I find whilst I am shooting other options appear that were not apparent at the beginning of the shoot. Get the important shots in the bag in the first ten minutes and then have some fun in the second ten minutes. Most likely you are not going to have all the time in the world and if you get twenty minutes to do these shoots use it wisely. Fine tune an approach that works for you be efficient and professional it will stand to you in the long term.
For this shoot I used a Nikon D850, Nikon 24-70mm f2.8, Nikon 70-200mm f2.8, Nikon 85mm f1.8 along with a one light Godox flash system.
Remember to breathe when you are working, and it will all come together.
