I was recently commissioned by a leading marketing and public relations firm based in Dublin for an ambassador employee shoot with Boston Scientific based in in Galway. The imagery that was created was to help attract new talent in conjunction with a new recruitment drive that the company was about to run. The company has a broad employee base and is one of the worlds leading medical device companies in the world.
From a photographic point of view the brief was to create environmental portraits of a current employee in a typical work setting that they would be involved in. Boston Scientific is a vibrant place to work and is at the forefront of modern medical innovations and are always on the lookout for new talent which can add a new dimension to their employee base.
The first part of the shoot captured some images from what could be called the engine room of the company the facilities section where all of the general health of the plant from is maintained and kept running efficiently. Facilities have direct responsibility for a range of facility infrastructure needs – such as HVAC, electrical engineering, EHS, energy, maintenance and civil engineering. This part of the shoot concentrated on the background of the facility that wouldn’t be a typical laboratory setting which you would associate with a medical device company.
The second part of the shoot however did concentrate on a typical laboratory setting and involved a young engineer that was in a team leader role. Because this is a busy work environment with tools of the trade lying around it can be difficult from a photographic point of view to get what would be called clean images free from clutter. The key is to take your time and try and remove the clutter without impacting on the work space and the professional who are busy doing their job. As a photographer it is also important to stay alert because you may want to wait to setup the perfect image to convey the message that the brief requires, but this opportunity might not arise so it’s important to stay fluid and capture images as they happen because sometimes these images will be more authentic. This approach combined with setting up some photographs will provide your client with a broad set of usable images.
From a technical point of view I used a very shallow depth of field for the photographs which kept the viewers’ attention on the employee ambassador.
