I was recently commissioned to shoot a cover for The Post Plus which is a supplement that appears as part of The Business Post, Ireland’s leading business newspaper. I am a regular freelancer for this publication. The shoot involved me travelling to Achill Island in Co. Mayo to meet Saoirse McHugh, environmentalist and former member of The Green Party here in Ireland, she left the party on point of principal, an admiral quality to have.
My plan was to photograph Saoirse on The Atlantic Drive just off Achill Sound and luckily for me the weather was on our side. The Atlantic Drive is truly stunning and I highly recommended visiting, it will blow you away (literally if you are not careful) visually, it is a tonic for the senses. Saoirse was a pleasure to photograph very friendly and chatty.
The approach was wide (24-70) to show the vastness of this beautiful place and long (70-200) to compress the background and bring it closer as if you were there in person. As always tools of choice were Nikons along with my trusty Nikon D850. I haven’t taken the plunge into the world of mirrorless just yet, the file colour/dynamic range that I get out of this camera as far as I am concerned are just brilliant. However I do appreciate the benefits of a mirrorless system and there is one on the horizon.
As always the drive home throw up the familiar question from a creative point of view as to why I didn’t do this or that, but when you are in the thick of shoot your hope is that you are doing your very best.
Below are a few samples from the shoot.
