People often ask, “What should I wear to have my headshot taken?” I always advise that plain monochromatic clothing photographs best; busy patterns, stripes etc, can distract from the subject and, if you want your headshot to appear more business-like, then the plainer the better. Whether you are going for an all out business look of smart casual make your clothing is neatly pressed. Hair is styled in a manner that is tidy and presentable unless you want the rock star look and in case if that is the look you are going for well that works too.
In preparation for your headshot, ideally you would approach your headshot session as if you were about to do a very important career interview. Afterall your headshot is often the first impression you make via LinkedIn to potential employers. So, approach your headshot shoot with the mentality that I am going to put my best foot forward and make the best first impression I possibly can. In most cases you don’t get a second chance to make a first impression.
You could also practice the type of expression that you would like to put forward in a mirror the evening before, are you going for full on teeth showing smile or a gentle expression. A good photographer will advise in this regard and take a selection of headshots so that you can chose what best suits the look you are hoping to achieve. Any facial marks, spots, birth marks etc can be removed in post-production, but you should discuss this with your photographer at the shoot prior to your headshots being delivered. No photographer would take it upon themselves to remove that much loved beauty spot unless specifically asked to do so.
